Humana Inc. is a Louisville, Kentucky-based for-profit American managed health care company that markets and administers health insurance in the United States. Humana has over 13 million customers in the U.S., reported a 2013 revenue of US$41.3 billion, and has over 52,000 employees.
In 2013 the company ranked 73 on the Fortune 500, which makes it the highest ranked (by revenues) company based in Kentucky. It is also the third largest health insurance provider in the nation.
Humana was investigated by U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services for sending flyers to MediCare recipients that were characterized by the AARP as being deceptive. The company's managed care model has also been criticized for ethical lapses and limitations.

The campaign to celebrate Humana’s 50th Anniversary was awarded a 2012 Gold Quill Award of Merit from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), one of the top global awards in public relations. The IABC Gold Quill Awards recognizes the best in communication management, skills and creativity across 32 categories. Humana won in the “Special Events — Internal or External” category for its efforts to celebrate the company’s 50th Anniversary, which included a number of special events and culminated with a celebration for associates on August 18, 2011 in Louisville. Two tiers of Gold Quill Awards judges carefully evaluated the entry and confirmed that it demonstrated world-class standards in strategic communication.
